Bizerba Classics

A special find in Trento, Italy

You don't have to look for old Bizerba treasures, they find you. Just like this table scale, which is waiting for its new owner on an oil drum between old lawn mowers. Our colleague Massimo Cremonesi came across this special find during a walk in Trento.

Timelessly beautiful technology

Massimo has a professional eye for Bizerba products in everyday use. But this find took him by surprise. Like a proud representative of timeless technology, a carefully restored Bizerba round-head bench scale raises its "head" above a collection of lawnmowers and tools at a second-hand shop in Trento. We don't know the story that brought this beautiful scale into the shop and into this unusual company. To find out, we went looking for clues.

One thing is certain: The tabletop scale was built between 1975 and 1985. They were developed by Wilhelm Kraut Junior together with August Sauter. The then owner of Bizerba, Wilhelm Kraut, founded the first foreign branch of our company in Italy in 1928, while August Sauter was a scale manufacturer from Albstadt-Ebingen in the Zollernalb district.

Parts of Germany to Italy

However, the scales did not make it all the way from Germany to Italy, where there was a huge demand for tabletop scales in the 1970s and 1980s. Due to national restrictions on EU trade at the time, all the necessary components were brought to Milan and assembled in a factory in the city to create a high-quality tabletop scale that is still reliable today.

How these scales got from Milan to Trento, and what they weighed and carried in their 50-60 year history, remains a mystery. But their story is not over yet. The scale has been completely overhauled and is for sale. And despite its age, it is still very powerful: it is calibrated from a minimum weight of 100 grams and weighs up to 15 kilograms. There's sure to be someone interested - if it hasn't already been sold.

« I was impressed and pleased to see that in a world dominated by electronics and IT, purely mechanical instruments are still being refurbished and offered. »

Bizerba Classics
A scale as a statement piece
Tea is a high-quality product where every gram counts. You might think that a specialist shop like Helmut Volkmann's would therefore rely on state-of-the-art digital weighing technology. Far from it! Volkmann trusts his old Bizerba tilt scale, which not only works as precisely and reliably as a Swiss watch, but is also part of his company philosophy.
